In 2014, the French tenor, Joël Roessel, discovered that the liquid from cooked beans could be whipped like egg whites. I decided to give it a try today since I had the liquid leftover from my cooked chickpeas. It was bizarre and exciting at the same time and gave me that feeling of discovery. This breakthrough in food chemistry is called “aquafaba.” I made marshmallow fluff with mine and then whipped up a pan of rice crispy treats.
Folks like to say nothing new will be discovered with music and no one is writing anything original. I disagree. Someone, somewhere is brewing up a new musical concoction. Is it you? Try something new today. You might just start a music revolution!

Summertime, One of these mornings Summer is traditionally the time for vacations. I always thought of the start of summer as the time to reflect and make new plans for the future. Maybe you stay at the same ocean cottage or travel to a new location. Being another year older makes you see the world differently.
This summer, when you’re sitting by the lake or breathing in the ocean air or hiking on a trail, reflect on what is around you and listen to the music of nature. They are healing sounds. [Note: I live on a lake and as soon as I finished writing this, I looked up and saw a fish jump straight up out of the water!] We’ve all been crying this week. Our tears don’t compare to those who lost their loved ones.
We’ve all been afraid this week. Our fear can cripple us. We’ve all been angry this week. Our anger won’t solve anything. We need to love. Our love will heal. Sing about love. Write a song about love. Share. Do you speak lazy and low, thinking you sound cool and relaxed? Your audience thinks you are mumbling and sound scared. Do you think of yourself as a relaxed rocker with an inviting presence, but you’re still wearing khakis and a button down shirt? It’s great to imagine how you’ll look when you finally play MSG, but is that you? Are you singing hard rock songs because you think it will get you into a festival but deep down you’re a crooner at heart?
I practice how to approach a microphone and introduce yourself with my beginner students. It’s amazing how intimidating an inanimate object can be if you don’t become familiar with it. In order to make your audience at ease, you need to be at ease and familiar with yourself first. The way you speak, the way you dress, the way you walk — all eyes and ears are on you so it’s important to know the message you are conveying. No one ever wins by deceit. Be true to yourself today and let it blossom. Space. That was the first thing that came to my mind when I realized I was late in getting out today’s blog. Space. Spaced Out. What was filling the space in my brain that I forgot my weekly blog?
Space in the universe is infinite. But the space we create for ourselves to get our tasks done is finite. The words we write fill the spaces on a page. How hard can it be to space out the business of my day? No excuse for spacing out. Do you find yourself thinking about all the things you need to do but not actually doing them? Don’t be a space cadet. Every morning, make a checklist of things you want to get done during the day. Get the important ones done first (like your blog!). When the mind is fresh in the morning you can accomplish so much. Later in the evening, you can shut down the brain and space out. I’m going to see what space movies are on Netflix now. Live long and prosper. |
